Canton…
a Great Place to Call Home

Elijah Morse portraitThe luxurious condominiums at Morse Village are located on one of the most important sites from America’s Industrial Age. Elijah Morse was a patriot, industrialist, public servant, and philanthropist. Upon his return to Massachusetts after the Civil War, he obtained a stove polish formula, eventually building a factory on Washington Street, known as the Rising Sun Stove Polish Company, whose product became an international household standard. He paid weekly wages long before the practice became law. During business downturns, he kept employees at half pay (vs. layoffs) and reduced their rents. A member of the state legislature, he was later elected to the U.S. Congress. Morse’s home featured a fountain, a source of clean water, indicative of his commitment to a healthy town water system.

He donated to the town the land on which the home he shared with his wife, Felicia, and their 3 sons, Abner, Samuel, and Benjamin had once stood – Now the home of   Canton High School’s Building B, and land on which Canton Town Hall now stands. He donated land and funds for Memorial Hall to honor the memory of Civil War dead. He also donated land and funds for the Mass Audubon Society and Sanctuary on Washington Street. Elijah Morse died on June 5, 1898, and was buried at Canton Cemetery.
